Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
