The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
