Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
