A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
